The duplex timing chain of the Fulvia engine must run taut. For this purpose, the oil-pressure chain tensioner is used. It prevents the chain from swinging in the bending direction ("whipping"). The tensioning rails are wear parts that should be replaced after about 120,000 to 300,000 km. If the tensioner fails, the chain can skip, then the pistons collide with the valves and result in engine damage. The life of the timing chain depends heavily on the operating conditions and maintenance. The duplex chain of the Fulvia is quite durable and can run over 200,000 km.
